Zero waste body powder is about avoiding talcum powder. It may be nostalgic, but we know better today. It’s a mined inorganic substance that has no business being near delicate regions, especially for babies. In fact, it’s been linked to ovarian cancer.
This lavender & chamomile organic body powder is created by a qualified aromatherapist, sold in a zero waste aluminium tin, made from organic arrowroot and cornstarch, Bentonite clay and soothing oils of chamomile & lavender You can also use as a light deodorant or dry shampoo. Avoid essential oils for pregnancy/nursing. Only use unscented powders for babies/children.
Natural alternatives are made from (cornstarch can sometimes cause yeast infections or rashes, so is best avoided for babies or sensitive skin).
A few are made with zinc oxide, but this ingredient is very toxic to pets. Often found in natural sunscreens, only use if you are not near pets or have showered it off. It’s not good for body powders, as these are applied after you shower.
You may have heard that talc causes cancer, and that’s why it should especially not be used near private areas of your body. Environmental Working Group reports that talc often contains asbestos (a known cause of cancer) and it’s believed that miners have increased risk.
But other studies found that talc could cause an increased risk of ovarian cancer, as it’s often applied not just to genital areas, but also found in feminine care, contraceptive devices and condoms (and cosmetics). Johnson & Johnson has said it is ‘deeply disappointed’ with its having to battle 9000 legal cases, involving its well-known baby powder. Rather than waiting for the experts to make their minds up, it makes more sense to simply avoid it, or use something else instead.
