Wasabi is simply Japanese horseradish. It’s a spicy plant that is often used in snacks like fried legumes (peas etc), it can also be used to make ice-cream and dessert (it also is used in making vegan sushi). Very spicy in taste, it’s similar to hot mustard, a plant to which it is related. The plant is usually turned into a paste and grated, but loses its flavour very quickly. Fresh wasabi leaves are also spicy, but can give you diarrhea! Avoid wasabi if you have high blood pressure or gastric issues.
Pea & Wasabi Vegan Mayo (The Veg Space) is a spicy mayo with creamy peas and hot wasabi. Use as a dip for veggies or crisps, or use in sandwiches, wraps and salads.
Summer Rolls with Peanut Wasabi Sauce (Elephantastic Vegan) are a pretty combo of carrots, cucumber, peppers, avocado and salad, plus rice noodles and Thai basil. Served with a spicy sauce, and sprinkled with black and white sesame seeds.
Wasabi & Cucumber Vegan Ice Cream (Green Evi) is a pretty combo of sweet coconut, fresh cucumber and mild wasabi, which only needs 5 ingredients. Raw and gluten-free, it’s also a gorgeous natural green colour.
